Team GLF is thrilled to welcome celebrated author and journalist Aparna Karthikeyan as the head of our General Fiction and Non-fiction list.
Aparna Karthikeyan is an author, independent journalist and senior fellow, People’s Archive of Rural India (PARI). Her non-fiction book, Nine Rupees an Hour, documents ten disappearing livelihoods of Tamil Nadu. It won the Green Lit Fest Business Honours award in 2021. She has written five books for children and has produced text articles, photo essays and video documentaries for various platforms, including The Hindu, PARI, The Caravan, The Wire and Scroll.
Aparna’s new series, ‘Let Them Eat Rice’, on seven crops in Tamil Nadu, was made possible by a research grant from Azim Premji University. The first story: The Rani of Thoothukudi’s Salt Pans, was shortlisted for the Redink awards, in the Women Empowerment and Gender Equality category and also nominated for the True Story Awards, Bern. Aparna won the Uzhavar Award ‘Best Agricultural Journalist’ for her consistent coverage of farmers, particularly women farmers and the first prize in The Statesman Awards for Rural Reporting 2023 for her series.
